Lunch at Aunty Pat's Pantolo Cafe

Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

Lunch was at the local restaurant cafe located inside the ranch; and is probably the only option for those who are waiting in eager anticipation for their tours to start (yes, like us!)
I love the simple decor of the cafe; and though the choices for food may be slightly limited, they are still not too bad. (Oh, I do like the homey name of the cafe too; probably to spice up that ranch feel factor?)

We had our lunch at Aunty Pat's Pantolo Cafe.

Grilled fish with corn cob

Can't remember how much this cost; think it was about USD$8-9 per plate?
This is a single portion, but it could very well feed the two of us!:-)

I didn't set much expectation for the food; perhaps due to the excitement or the holiday mood?
However, the grilled fish, sans the oily bit, was surprisingly quite good!

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the corn cob :-(
A pity, since I love corn cob usually!

After lunch, we waited for another half an hour before making our way to embark on our tour, yeah!

To be continued...

When in Shanghai, Eat like the Locals

As the saying goes, 'When in Rome, do what the Romans do' and this applies to China or any other country one visits as well in order to soak in the local culture and experience for oneself the diversity.

That was the main reason that we took a walk off the beaten path; away from the busy streets with all the fancy and luxurious restaurants and also the familiar faces of the fast food outlets to do a little exploring on our own and find a place where most locals were having their lunch.
Of course, with the help of our knowledge of the Chinese language (thank God for that when you are in China), we strayed off the main and busy streets and walked into the small lanes and alleys.
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

The small lanes are dotted with little eateries and stalls, where one just buys off the cart or the steamers and there is barely place to sit. Busy city dwellers and lunch goers are spotted buying their lunches from stalls like these and running off with their lunch in plastic bags.
There are also really small eateries which were packed with people and there are only 2-3 tables available inside the shop.

We walked further and found two larger eateries; well, one was actually a restaurant and the other was crowded with people.

Well, as it seems, the latter seemed to fit the bill perfectly and we knew it when we set foot into the shop which served fast lunch (economy style) and also famous noodles, from ironically, Suzhou.

There were two levels located inside the shop; with a makeshift platform for a half level upstairs for more dining tables.

It was a good thing that the lunch crowd was starting to disperse when we were there, although we did have to share a table with a guy who was having his lunch alone.

There is still one habit of the Chinese I could never get used to, and that is having to spit or cough even while having meals.
I don't even want to imagine that spit pot underneath each table, and well, as they say, if you were to eat like the locals, you will have to get used to their practices.

A glimpse of our lunch, a proper meal with three dishes, a soup and white rice; typical of a normal Chinese meal.

The price was quite reasonable for such a filling meal too; it cost only about RMB14 for this, which approximates to MYR7 for lunch.

You can read about the full details of lunch in my food blog here

One thing to note, don't expect high standards of hygiene in local eateries like these though, as I have mentioned above.
If you are extremely picky, I'd advise fast food or the modern dining outlets (which I do prefer sometimes too, due to the hygiene levels)

However, it can be fun too, to venture to the local favorites and enjoy the local experience.
Though, a word of caution; be sure of where you are heading to and keep to the path where you know where to return to and beware of suspicious characters.
Don't act like you are lost even if you are, and just be cool and steady.
Of course, the best is if you have a GPS or a local guide with you if you do not know Chinese. That way, you can explore even more local eateries with better food and prices.

Lunch by the beach

Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

Before we left Pangkor Laut Resort on our last day, we had our lunch by the beach at Chapman's Bar which was located in Emerald Bay.

This was the last restaurant that we have yet to try, and we were keen to try it on our last day despite the hectic checkout schedule.

It was semi-buffet for the appetizers, soup and salads while we order the mains from the menu.

This is another filling lunch, and I felt it was a pity that we could not enjoy the beach environment that long as we were rushing to check out.

I know I had already started to miss the island already...

Lunch with the peacocks at Royal Bay Beach Club

Yup, with the peacocks, you didn't read wrongly!

We had a late lunch after our spa session, and that day's lunch was at the Royal Bay Beach Club.

Thankfully, most of the restaurants or bars around here serve lunch until 4 o' clock in the afternoon, making sure that most of us who have spa or other appointments do not starve to death.

We sat down in the rather casual and relaxed environment of the restaurant, and were immediately greeted by a bunch of peacocks striding proudly into the restaurants like they owned the place.
You know how haughty peacocks can be sometimes, and really, we were surprised at how bold they were and I even wondered where they came from until I remembered that we are surrounded by rainforest, and they do have a botanical park on the island.

The peacocks were harmless, really, but they can a little nosy as they came too close to us diners; in fact, too close for comfort!

Lunch was a simple but enjoyable affair; with the lovely food served! (I won't elaborate much on the food but will go in general, as I will cover on the food in my food blog :)

Singapore 2010: Lunch @ Xin Wang Cafe

Shortly after checking in, I went to the nearest shopping centre (not a problem at all staying in the Swissotel) to scout for lunch with my colleague.

We settled on this Taiwanese cafe; Xin Wang cafe for lunch.

The wallpapers in the cafe were creatively designed with the comical caricatures to represent the scenes of a market and it matched the menu perfectly!~

I ordered the Homemade barley with additional pearls (SGD$2)
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
(Yup, I am a huge barley fan!~ ;P )

It was quite refreshing after our flight and the journey from the airport; not forgetting the long queue during check in!

Braised minced pork with egg (SGD$6.80)

Side dishes
Fried fish paste with sweet and sour sauce (SGD$5.80)
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
It was not too bad; although I expected it come with the gravy itself already on the fish paste instead of having the sweet and sour sauce served separately.
It was just like chili sauce accompanying the fish paste.
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
Taste wise, I liked it too!~

Deep fried tofu with fish paste (SGD$4.80)
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
It was just average in taste; nothing extraordinary.

Dessert was a special recommendation by the waitress; it was a new addition to the menu: Special pomelo with mango and sago pudding.
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
I was not too enthusiastic about it; as I am not a fan of mango.

Overall the food here was not too bad; and the price was reasonable as well; provided we don't convert to our local currency where everything will be doubled!~

Perth 2010: Lunch and shopping @ Karrinyup Mall

Before departing to the airport, we drove to the nearest shopping mall to our hotel; Karrinyup for lunch and some shopping since we had a few hours before our scheduled time at the airport.

Spotted a few familiar brands which we have in Malaysia too~

We had our lunch at the in-house food court which was already packed with working people and also busy shoppers

After traversing from stall to stall, we settled on this Chinese Canton for some much needed Chinese/local food =)

Chinese food; or this economy style lunch was not that cheap either as they offer two packages; AUD$9.90(small) or AUD$10.90(large)

You can take as much as you want from the variety; or whatever you can fit on your plate.

Mind you, the small plate was not that big and it was a challenge putting stuffs on it.

We weren't that greedy, and we just put whatever we could finish between us as we did not want that heavy of a lunch before our flight

After lunch, we walked around and then this California smoothies which promoted healthy juices and smoothies attracted me

My strawberry smoothie was a little too sweet for my liking though..

We left Karrinyup to proceed to the airport soon after a short round of shopping...

To be continued to last post for Perth...
